Your first question may be, “What is krill oil?” If you’re not familiar with krill oil, you should know that it is a completely natural oil extracted from krill. Krill are small shrimp-like creatures that live in the ocean. They are what most whales and even some bigger fish typically eat. “Krill” actually translates to “whale food” in Norwegian.

Here’s how the oil from krill can benefit your health…

Lowering High Blood Pressure

The oil from krill is known to make blood platelets less “sticky”, and therefore less likely to clot. When you have high blood pressure, it can be due to the fact that your blood isn’t thin enough, causing the pressure in your veins and arteries to be abnormally high. That’s why most people with high blood pressure are prescribed blood thinners. Krill oil is a more natural remedy to high blood pressure. When you lower your blood pressure, you can also minimize the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious or life-threatening conditions.

If you’re currently taking medication for high blood pressure, you should consult your doctor before you stop taking your medication. Although, krill oil supplements would be a great boost for any medications you may be taking.

Alleviate Menstrual Cramps

Krill oil is known to alleviate menstrual cramps and reduce PMS symptoms. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it helps the uterus from swelling as much, therefore being less painful. It also helps thin the blood, which can help with the headaches some women experience during their period. Krill oil also contains astaxanthin, which is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

Krill oil and other fish oil can also be good for your skin. This can be more dependent on your specific skin type, but if your skin responds significantly well to krill oil, you are likely to experience less harsh acne breakouts during your period.

Using krill oil to alleviate pain can reduce the need for over-the-counter medications, which can sometimes cause additional symptoms. It is common for some pain relief medications, especially those geared toward menstrual relief, to be harsh on sensitive stomachs causing nausea and/or diarrhea.

Diet

Krill oil is rich in healthy fats. Some people who have a restricted diet may be missing out on these fats. People who are vegan or vegetarian may not always be able to get a dose of healthy fats, which can be very beneficial to heart health, as well as gut health. Aside from avocados and nuts, healthy fats can be hard to come by.

Veganism and vegetarianism aren’t unhealthy choices, by any means. Healthy as they may be, it’s always best to give your body everything it needs. Even if you have to supplement your diet with things like krill oil, or other whole food vitamins. Krill oil is rich, specifically, with omega-3, as is most fish. If you don’t eat fish, you can make up for what you don’t eat with the supplements you take.

If you have a shellfish allergy, you may want to consult your doctor before you take krill oil. Everyone experiences allergies differently. Yours may not be serious or lethal, but it would still be best to look out for your safety before trying something new.

The Conclusion

Krill oil can be extremely beneficial for pain relief, clearer skin, heart health, dietary restrictions, and gut health. If you have any reservations about krill oil due to a shellfish allergy, or medications you may already be taking, don’t be afraid to consult your doctor to determine whether or not krill oil is the right choice for you and your needs.
